Description
The K6 telephone kiosk, located on the village green in Stoughton, is a Grade II listed structure. It was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and is a development of his earlier K2 box.
This kiosk is made of cast iron and glass, featuring three glazed sides with eight registers and margin lights, while the rear side is solid with reeded decoration. Above the four arched sides is a Soane-inspired canopy dome, with each side displaying a crown in relief above a glazed panel that reads 'TELEPHONE'. The interior has been updated with modern equipment.
The K6 kiosk is recognized as an iconic example of industrial design, showcasing Scott's blend of Neoclassical forms with modern technology. It is also noted for its visual relationship with other Grade II listed buildings, positioned centrally on the village green, which enhances its historical significance.
