Description
South Cowpen Cottage is a cottage, probably from the 16th century, that has been altered. It is built of squared Wealden sandstone rubble and has a tiled roof. The cottage features a two-room plan with a continuous later outshut and a single-storey addition currently under construction on the left side. The front elevation has two storeys and three bays. The solid door and diamond-pane leaded casement windows were added during a restoration around 1900. The ground floor windows have basket arched heads, and the spandrels are carved with "C" and "M," representing Catherine, the niece of William Morris. Inside, the sitting room includes a bressumer over the fireplace and joists that are all chamfered with shield stops. The roof is underdrawn and features carved bosses from around 1900.
