Description
Rogate War Memorial is located in the churchyard wall of the Parish Church of St Bartholomew, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial features a tall, tapering stone octagonal shaft with base spurs that support an intricate crucifixion scene depicting Christ along with two mourning figures, the Virgin Mary and the beloved disciple, John. Beneath the cross, there is a shield carved with the Greek letters alpha and omega, accompanied by a cross pattée. On the reverse side of the cross is another shield displaying the monogram IHS. The front of the shaft features a depiction of St George and the dragon set under a Gothic canopy. The shaft is supported by four classical scrolls, and the base is integrated into the churchyard wall, leaving two sides of a square visible. The base bears the inscription IN MEMORIAM AD 1914 – 1919 (28 NAMES) across the projecting sides, and below it, ANNO DNI 1939 – 1945 (7 NAMES).
