Description
The Parish Church of St Peter is a Grade II* listed building that dates back to the 13th century. It was restored and largely rebuilt by the architect George Edmund Street around 1870, with further work completed in 1937 funded by Mrs Catherine Macdonald Bushanon of Lavington Park. The church features a chancel, a south transept or chapel, a nave with a north aisle, and a bell-gable at the west end of the nave.
Notably, the Reverend Henry Edward Manning, who later became a Cardinal, served as the Rector from 1833 to 1851 and was also the Archdeacon of Chichester during that time. He married Caroline, the third daughter of the previous Rector, The Reverend John Sargent, in the church on November 7, 1833. Mrs Manning is buried in the churchyard, although she does not have a tombstone. Additionally, the Reverend Samuel Wilberforce, who was Bishop of Oxford and later of Winchester, was married in the church on June 11, 1828, to Emily, Mrs Manning's eldest sister. Both Emily and the Bishop are also buried in the churchyard next to Mrs Manning.
