Description
The barn at Frithfold Farm is a 17th-century structure featuring an attached cart store. It has an L-shaped configuration and consists of a five-bay threshing barn that runs north to south. The barn is timber-framed, with external weatherboarding on the east, north, and part of the west sides. The remaining sections of the west and south elevations are made of coursed stone with brick dressings, particularly around the six ventilation slots on each elevation and the quoins. The roof is tiled, hipped at one end and half-hipped at the other.
Inside, the barn has a wall frame with a midrail and curved tension braces, along with jowled upright posts. The roof features an angled queen strut design with purlins, slightly curved tension braces, and original rafters. The floor is made of compacted earth and hardcore.
To the east of the barn is a contemporary open-fronted cartshed with four bays. This structure has coursed stone walls on the north and east sides, and six posts on concrete padstones to the south, four of which support internal trusses. The cartshed also has original roof trusses, angled queen struts, purlins, and a hipped tiled roof. This barn is recognized as a good example of a 17th-century threshing barn with an attached cart shed.
