Description

Nos. 5 and 6 Egdean Cottages comprise two cottages, originally one house. No. 6 is a timber-framed building, dating from the 16th century or earlier, and refaced in the early 19th century. No. 5 dates from the 18th century. The south front of No. 6 is faced with diaper-patterned red brick with grey headers, while the west front is stone rubble with brick dressings. The north elevation has a ground floor of stone rubble, with the first floor rendered, but retains an upright post and curved brace suggesting an earlier 16th-century origin. A brick lean-to is attached to the east side. The roof is tiled, hipped, and has a gablet to one end, with a brick chimneystack to the other. The first floor has one four-light and one three-light casement window. The ground floor features one four-light casement in a cambered surround, and one single-light casement also in a cambered surround. A cambered doorcase with a wooden architrave frames a plank door. The interior ground floor room contains a spine beam with a 2-inch chamfer and lamb's tongue stop, along with remaining evidence of a curved opening for an internal door. No. 5 has a front elevation of red brick and a rear elevation of diaperwork red brick with grey headers, under a tiled roof. It features one casement window with a cambered surround and plank doors. Inside, there is a brick inglenook with a wooden seat, two spice alcoves, and a curved wooden bressumer with run-out stops. The spine beam and floor joists are chamfered with run-out stops. The roof has a ridge piece.
