Description
Holeslack is a house dating from the 17th century, with later alterations and additions. It has rendered walls and a graduated slate roof. There are three chimney stacks: the left stack has a single round shaft, the right has paired round shafts, both from the 19th century, while the central round stack is larger and likely original. The building has an L-shaped plan with a later extension on the right side. It features a gabled porch with a finial, one sash window to the left, and three sash windows to the right. The upper floor has five sash windows. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments suggests that the house was originally the dower house for Sizergh Castle, though this is not supported by records. According to Nicholson and Burn in "The History and Antiquities of the Counties of Westmorland and Cumberland, Volume I," the owner in 1726 was John Jackson, a gentleman and the founder of the Chapel of Helsington.
