Description

SD 48 NE HELSINGTON

3/10 Holeslack

II

House, C17 with later alterations and additions. Rendered walls. Graduated slate roof. 3 chimney stacks; left has single round shaft, right paired round shafts both C19. Central round stack larger and probably original. L-shaped plan with later extension to right. Gabled porch with finial, one sash window to left, 3 to right. 5 sash windows to upper floor. The R.C.H.M. suggests that the house was originally the dower house for Sizergh Castle, but this is not borne out by any records, and Nicholson (Joseph) and Burn (Richard), The History and Antiquities of the Counties of Westmorland and Cumberland, Volume I, record the owner in 1726 as John Jackson (gentleman) the founder of the Chapel of Helsington.
