Description
The front garden walls and gateway adjoining the east of West Week Farmhouse date from 1656, with most of the walls likely being contemporary, although the south side is probably from the 19th century. The gateway is constructed from granite ashlar, while the walls are made of granite stone rubble, with the original sections featuring granite ashlar coping.
The gateway has an embattled parapet with moulded coping. It features a low elliptical arch with a moulded surround, and the spandrels are carved with fleur-de-lys. This arch is recessed within a flat-topped arch that has a hoodmould above it, with the date 1656 carved onto the labels. Above the arch is a plaque with the Battishill arms. The plank door is a 20th-century rebuild but incorporates some of the original ironwork.
The gateway is located on the north side of the enclosure in front of the farmhouse and is flanked by a high stone rubble wall that has granite ashlar coping shaped like a keel. The original wall extends along the east side, while the south side is from the 19th century and lacks the ashlar coping. This structure is an attractive and unusual feature associated with the significant West Week Farmhouse.
