Description
New Bridge is a bridge that crosses the River Dart, believed to date from the 15th century and repaired in 1645. It is constructed of granite rubble, except for the arch at the Holne end, which is made of ashlar. The piers are formed from squared and coursed rubble up to the springing level of the arches. The bridge features two main rounded arches over the river and a smaller, slightly pointed third arch that crosses the Widecombe bank. The arches have well-cut voussoirs, with the masonry above slightly projecting on chamfered corbels. The two main arches spring from chamfered imposts on the underside. Each pier has sharply pointed cutwaters on both sides, which create refuges on top. The parapets on the Holne side are made of ashlar up to the first cutwater, sweeping outwards at the end to finish in low, oblong-section piers, with rounded granite coping extending to half of the first cutwater. On the Widecombe side, the parapets are made of rubble, also sweeping outwards but dying away into the ground, with copings of chamfered granite blocks.
