Description
This barn, located approximately 2.5 metres north of West Week Farmhouse, is likely from the 17th century and was reroofed in the 20th century. It is constructed of granite stone rubble with large quoins and has a corrugated iron roof. The barn is built down a gentle slope and faces east. Originally, there were opposing doorways to the threshing floor, but the smaller rear doorway has been blocked. The large front doorway is nearly full height but is currently missing its doorframe and doors.
At the right end of the barn, there is a horse engine house, probably from the 19th century, which projects forward. This engine house has a semi-hexagonal end, and its hipped roof is supported by monolithic granite posts. It no longer contains any machinery and has been converted into a woodshed by filling most gaps between the posts with granite stone rubble. There is also a secondary storage shed against the left end of the barn front. The main roof is gable-ended to the right and hipped to the left, with the roof structure replaced in the 20th century.
This barn is part of a group of buildings associated with West Week Farmhouse, which together represent one of the best collections of traditional granite buildings in this area of Dartmoor.
