Description
Bramblebye is a house that dates back to the 17th century or earlier. It underwent extensive repairs after falling into semi-dereliction in the late 20th century. The building is constructed from local stone rubble and has a corrugated-iron roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end, which was formerly thatched. There is a rendered shaft on the right end stack.
The house has a single-depth main block that is two rooms wide, although the partition between the two rooms has been removed. There is a rear service outshut. The main block features opposed front and rear doors, but the rear door is secondary. It is possible that there was a cross passage at the left end of the house, which has since been truncated.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window front. It includes a central plank front door with a cover strip and a timber lintel. The windows are two and three-light casements with glazing bars. There is a second doorway on the front at the right, which is concealed by a 20th-century conservatory.
Inside, there is an open fireplace with a scroll-stopped lintel and a winder stair alongside. Most of the internal timber has been replaced in the late 20th century but is in the same position as the earlier timbers. There is evidence of re-used carved masonry, possibly from Buckfast Abbey, built into the fireplace and external walls. The roof has not been inspected but is reported to have pegged A-frames.
