Description
An 18th-century miller’s house and adjoining water-powered woollen mill, later converted into cottages, stands in West Buckfastleigh Higher Combe. The building is constructed of stone rubble with granite dressings, topped with a slate roof featuring gable and half-hipped ends, and a hipped corner. It has a two-story and attic layout on an L-shaped plan. The northwest wing originally housed the mill, while the southeast wing served as the Miller’s House and cottages, presenting a stuccoed east front with an eight-window range. The house to the left has a four-window range with sash windows incorporating glazing bars on the ground floor, three-light casements above, and a fielded panel door with a rectangular fanlight located off-centre. Cottages to the right feature 19th-century casements. A large slated pentice hood covers the ground floor, and a fire insurance plaque is positioned above. Two 20th-century gabled dormers have been added. Granite ridge and end chimney stacks are present. The rear of the house is slate hung. The mill wing to the northwest retains original three-light casements on the south side with leaded panes, along with slightly cambered granite arches to the ground floor windows. A lean-to is situated on the west end with a slurried slate roof. The north side, facing the stream, displays blocked round and segmentally arched openings at a lower stream level, with 19th-century casements inserted above.
