Description
The smithy and cartshed, located approximately 4 metres north of Yeo Farmhouse, are likely from the 18th century, with the smithy predating the cartshed. Both structures were extensively refurbished in the mid to late 19th century. The smithy is constructed of granite stone rubble and features a corrugated iron roof, while the cartshed has a timber frame with a slate roof.
The layout consists of the smithy and the adjoining cartshed, which are aligned slightly differently but both face south. They occupy a space between two earlier buildings: the Old School House to the left and a barn to the right. The smithy is a single-storey, single-cell building situated to the west, with a doorway at the right end. The cartshed, which is to the east, has four bays and is open-fronted at both ends. The front of the smithy has a single fixed pane window from the late 19th to early 20th century, positioned high in the wall and slightly right of centre. There is a contemporary plank door at the right end, and the rear has two window openings, although the windows are currently missing.
Originally, the cartshed's roof was supported by timber posts, but the lower sections of most of these posts have been replaced with granite posts. The roof rises from the smithy to the cartshed. Inside the smithy, there is a 19th-century granite furnace along with a granite trough. All the openings in the smithy feature external granite and internal timber lintels, and the roof is supported by 19th-century A-frame trusses. The cartshed also has a roof of 19th-century A-frame trusses, although some of the timbers may be reused from the 18th century.
These buildings are part of a group of significant and attractive farm and mill structures at Yeo, which also includes the farmhouse, the mill, an office, garden railings, the Old School House, and the barn. In the 19th century, the road was redirected south of the farm, meaning these buildings once faced the road. The Perryman family has owned the farm since around 1450.
