Description
This blocked doorway, dated 1607, is located on Lowerhouse Lane in North Nibley. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a moulded Tudor-arched design with a hoodmould. Weathered coping leads up to the doorway, which surrounds a rectangular inscription stone. The inscription reads: 'N. M. M. H./ S. P. N. C./ ANNO DMI. 1607'. The initials translate to: "Today 'tis mine, Tomorrow, thine, but whose next day I cannot say." The remains of a contemporary plank door are still in place. This doorway is believed to have been the entrance to the house of John Smyth, which was reportedly destroyed during a family quarrel.
