Description

Phillpott's Warehouse is a warehouse, local authority offices, and shops built in 1846 by architect John Jaques of Gloucester and builder William Wingate for corn merchant A.H. Phillpotts. In 1985, it was converted into shops on the basement and ground floor, with offices for Gloucester City Council on the upper floors. An infill addition was made on the north side to connect with the offices in the converted Kimberley Warehouse, along with a large 20th-century extension on the south side.

The building is constructed of red brick with stone lintels and sills on the window openings, featuring a renewed slate roof with skylights, barge, and eaves boards. Internally, it has hollow cast-iron columns and renewed timber or concrete floors, with steel frame and glass extensions from the 20th century. The structure is a large rectangular block with a gable end facing the Main Dock, partially obscured by the 20th-century additions.

The exterior is six storeys tall, with a basement and loft floor. Each side of the block has a full-height former loading door opening in the center, flanked by eight windows on each floor. The gable-end walls each have a central former loading door opening, with two windows on either side and a single window in the gable. The former loading door openings have been infilled with 20th-century windows and panels, or on the north side, provide access to the infill addition. All windows are fitted with 20th-century side-hung sashes.

Inside, the building has been refitted, retaining some cast-iron columns, and the loft features original queen post trusses.
