Description

The Inner Gate adjoining Number 15 College Green is a gatehouse dating from the 14th century, with alterations made in the 16th and 18th centuries. It is constructed of rubble, with ashlar and dressed stone details, and features a stuccoed upper storey and a cross-gabled tiled roof. The building is a square block that includes a carriage passage through the lower storey, connecting College Green and Miller's Green, with access to the upper storey from the adjoining Number 15 College Green on the west side.

The gatehouse has two storeys, and both the south and north fronts are similar, each featuring a wide 14th-century archway with plain stone jambs and moulded, pointed arches topped with hoodmoulds and weathered finials. On the south side of the first floor, there is a central 18th-century sash window with glazing bars arranged in three rows of four panes, and the gables have plain barge boards.

Inside the passage, there is a 14th-century lierne vault with a central boss, and a blocked doorway in the west wall. On the first floor, a room is lined with late 16th-century square framed panelling, capped by a frieze of moulded panels. The 18th-century chimney-piece features bolection moulding, and the window has 18th-century panelled jambs.
