Description

Alexandra Warehouse is a bonded warehouse that has been converted into a shop, offices, studios, and workshops. It was built in 1870 by J Moss for JE and SH Fox, who were corn merchants and millers. The building suffered significant fire damage in 1875 and was partially rebuilt, with the original eaves and verges replaced by a parapet. It is constructed of red brick with stone lintels and sills, and features internally timber floors supported by hollow, cast-iron columns. The roof is slate, with 20th-century roof lights added to the loft.

The warehouse is a large, rectangular, gabled block positioned at a right angle to the Dock. The entrance is located under a 20th-century canopy at the east end. The exterior consists of six storeys, a basement, and a loft. There are former loading door openings in the center of each side, flanked by ten windows. Each gable-end wall has two windows on either side, along with a single window in the gable and one above it, all of which have been infilled with 20th-century casements. Above the former loading door openings, there are timber, gabled, cat-head canopies that once housed hoists. All windows feature stone lintels and projecting sills, and are fitted with 20th-century casements. The right-hand side of the west gable-end's lower floors has no windows due to the demolition of a later building. The interior has not been inspected.
