Description
No. 16 Berkeley Street is a late 18th-century town house, now used as offices. The building is constructed of brick with stone detailing, topped by a slate roof and featuring a brick stack. It is a double-depth block with entrances on the street front: a doorway on the right leading into the house and a doorway on the left providing access to a passage leading to a rear yard. The three-bay street front features a rendered offset plinth and a stone cornice with modillion decoration. A brick parapet tops the building, with stone capping. The doorway on the right is framed by a timber doorcase with pilasters and a pediment, supported by shaped brackets. It has deep panelled reveals and a panelled door with glazed upper panels. The doorway on the left is framed by timber doorcase with pilasters and an open pediment above an infilled semicircular arch, with a six-panel door, the upper four panels fielded. The tall sash windows on the ground and first floors have 3x4 panes, while the second floor windows are shorter. These are set within openings with rubbed brick flat arches and projecting stone sills; the ground floor windows have decorative wrought-iron window guards. The interior is not inspected but is known to contain an 18th-century staircase and other features of interest from the 18th century.
