Description

Hatch Mill Farmhouse is a house, originally a mill-house, likely dating from the 18th century, though incorporating fabric from an earlier building. It was partially rebuilt in the late 20th century with a contemporary addition. The building is constructed of granite and slate stone rubble, with a gable ended slate roof and gable end stacks with offsets. The original layout comprised two principal rooms, each heated by a gable end stack. A two-room outshut was originally attached to the rear, accessed separately from the front rooms, with the right-hand room formerly having separate external access in the end wall. The house fell into disrepair in the later 20th century and underwent a partial reconstruction, incorporating new granite mullion windows. A single-storey addition was built at the right-hand end, replacing an earlier lean-to. Numerous earlier granite features are incorporated into the building’s fabric. The house has a symmetrical three-window front. The first floor windows are late 20th-century metal frame casements with diamond leaded panes. The ground floor windows are an unusual form of mullion: the left-hand one is a late 20th-century replica of the other, which may be a very late type of mullion. Both have a simply moulded granite frame with a similar central mullion, flush with the outside wall. The central doorway has an acute 4-centred granite arched entrance with double hollow chamfers. At the right-hand gable end is a likely original square-headed granite framed light. A single-storey late 20th-century extension is attached to the right gable end. At the left gable end, no straight joint is discernible between the main block and the outshut, as that end was partially rebuilt. Within the gable end of the outshut are two original single light square-headed mullions. Inside, each of the two front rooms features a 4-centred arched granite doorway leading to the room behind. The front right-hand room has a fireplace with a chamfered granite surround, the lintel of which may be a replacement. The rear right-hand room has a 4-centred arched granite doorway in its gable end wall, formerly leading to the exterior but now enclosed by the 20th-century extension. During the 20th-century repairs, the roof trusses were completely replaced.
