Description
Hartland Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse built between 1872 and 1874. The engineer was Mr. Douglas, who later became Sir James Douglas, and the surveyor was Mr. Beasley. The lighthouse was constructed by Mr. Yerward from Wales using rendered stone hewn from the blue slatey rock found on the site. The circular tower stands 57 feet high and is situated 120 feet above sea level. There is also a square two-storey building attached to the lighthouse. A significant part of the associated building was demolished around ten years ago, as noted in a survey from 1988. Before the lighthouse was built, the site was completely inaccessible, necessitating the construction of a new road that began in 1871. The foundation stone of the tower was laid in November 1872, and during its construction, a sealed bottle containing the names of those present, some current newspapers, and a few coins was placed in a cavity within the structure. The light was installed by Messrs Chance Bros of Birmingham, featuring a revolving dioptric light that emits red and white flashes every 30 seconds, visible from a distance of 17 miles. The lighthouse was officially opened on July 1st, 1874, when Lady Stuckley of Hartland Abbey lit the lamp.
