Description
Lake Farmhouse is a farmhouse, likely dating back to the 17th century or earlier, with significant alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of rendered rubble walls with two brick stacks, one at the left gable end and a lateral stack at the front, projecting on one side. The roof is slate, gabled at the left end and half-hipped over the front wing. The original layout was likely three rooms and a through passage, probably with screens in the passage. A gable end stack originally heated the lower room, and a front lateral fireplace served the hall. The farmhouse was extended with a wing that was originally a barn, converted to living space in the 20th century. Later 19th and 20th century outbuildings are located at the rear. The front elevation is asymmetrical with five windows, and four windows to the wing. The windows are 20th-century 2-light casements, with a 3-light window on the first floor right of centre. Most windows have small panes, except the first-floor window far right. A 20th-century single-light casement is on the wing’s first floor, with French windows below. A gabled 20th-century glazed porch is positioned to the left of centre, with a glazed door, and a single-lean-to porch is also present in the angle with the wing. A small gabled wing sits to the right of centre at the rear, with 19th and 20th century outbuildings to its left. The interior retains several 17th-century features, including in the hall, two cross beams, chamfered with bar and hollow step stops, one of which is supported by a chamfered wooden corbel built into the wall above the fireplace. The lateral fireplace has an ovolo moulded wooden lintel. The lower room has a complete beamed ceiling with three chamfered cross beams, hollow step stops, and similarly decorated joists. The wooden fireplace lintel matches. The owner reports a concealed plank and muntin screen partition between the lower room and the passage, and a similar screen is likely on the other side of the passage. The roof space has 20th-century timbers. Despite later alterations, the farmhouse preserves some good quality 17th-century features.
