Description
TRUSHAM SX 88 SE
3/236 Shortridge Farmhouse - and adjoining barn 23.8.55 Farmhouse and adjoining barn. Late C15-early C16. Rendered rubble and cob walls. Half-hipped thatched roof stepped down to lower level over gable ended barn. 2 old, external, lateral stacks to rear. 2-room cross passage plan plus long barn to east and outshut to west end. Barn partly floored circa Cl?-C18 and this one room part adjoining and now incorporated into house. Right room higher so possibly the original hall. 2 storeys to house. Was once 3 window south front but eaves to right rasied circa 1980 and further window inserted. Main doorway slightly off centre to right; 2 windows to left and 1 to right. Doorway and small window to outshut and doorway and wide window to converted part of barn. Mostly early C20 casements and late C20 doors. Further doorway central to original barn length; old small, oak window with internal shutter left and large 2 light shuttered opening with oak lintel to right. 2-light window with shutters over door and slightly to right. Interior of original house has 3-bay smoke blackened roof structure of 2 pairs of jointed crucks rising from ground floor level and with one cambered morticed collar surviving and wide threaded purlins. Similar jointed cruck structure with original purlins and rafters in part of barn but no smoke blackening. Oak stud partition to left of cross passage, in room above and to apex of roof space. Lime wash over smoke blackening below collar level to left roof space. Chamfered and stopped oak axial beam and oak joists originally with plaster ceiling in left room and internal oak winder stair to left of partly blocked fireplace. Oak winder stair recessed to right. Rounded and tapered chimney breast at top of stairs. 2 studs nearest to fireplace each have 18 inclined holes with pegs. Original thick end walls with wide opening cut C20 from left room to outshut and pierced by doorway to room converted from barn at lower level, right. This room has chamfered cross beam and joist not as old as floors inserted in house. Barn has blocked doorway opposite large front opening. Raised pavement with rubble wall and low parapet along front of house. Octagonal crown post used as bird table seen in barn.
