Description

This is a barn and garden walls located about 100 metres southeast of Dunchideock House. The barn likely dates from the 18th century, with some repairs made in the 20th century. It is constructed of unrendered cob on stone footings, with the rear wall repaired using concrete block faced with cob. The roof is tiled and hipped at the ends, and there is a rear lateral stack. The garden wall is made of whitewashed plastered cob with a slate capping and features 19th-century iron gates.

The barn is a late 18th-century threshing barn, with its north end wall adjacent to the road. Originally, it had opposed double doors, but in the early 20th century, it was converted into a theatre for parish performances. During this conversion, three early 17th-century windows and a fireplace were added, and a rear lateral chimney replaced the rear doorway. The front elevation includes large double doors set in a doorway with a timber lintel. To the right of the doorway is a four-light early 17th-century Beerstone ovolo-moulded window, and to the left is a similar two-light window. There is also a smaller doorway on the front to the right and a similar four-light window in the north end facing the road. Access to the interior was not available during the survey in 1985, but it is said that an early 17th-century fireplace exists inside. The early 17th-century features are believed to have come from a house in Chagford. The cob garden wall runs alongside the road and forms a group with the barn and Dunchideock House.
