Description

Church Cottage and Hillside is a terrace of four estate cottages, converted into two cottages, dating from around the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of local stone rubble with red brick window arches and features an asbestos slate roof with gable ends. The left gable end has ornate fretwork bargeboards, while the right gable end has bargeboards that have been replaced with slate hanging. The structure includes a rendered gable end and central axial stacks.

The layout originally consisted of a row of four cottages arranged in two pairs, with two pairs of adjoining doorways and shared porches. The cottages were likely designed as one-room plans with services located in rear outshuts. In the 20th century, the cottages were converted into two larger units, and a garage was added to the left-hand end of the left cottage.

The exterior is one storey with an attic and features a symmetrical four-window range of two-light casements with leaded panes, cambered red brick arches, and slate sills. The right side, Hillside, retains its 19th-century casements with diamond-shaped leaded panes, while Church Cottage has 20th-century replacement casements. The paired doorways are topped with open hipped roof porches; Hillside has 19th-century plank doors, while Church Cottage has a 20th-century plank door on the left and a blocked doorway on the right. The front garden area wall, constructed of stone rubble in the 19th century, includes two pedestrian gateways, each fitted with late 20th-century wrought iron gates. The interior has not been inspected.
