Description
The war memorial, located immediately west of the Durant Arms public house in Ashprington, is built on an ancient cross base, likely from the late medieval period. It has an octagonal shape and is constructed from stone rubble, featuring a dressed stone cornice. Atop this base is a dressed granite war memorial commemorating the 1914-18 conflict, designed as a medieval cross with an octagonal shaft, pyramid steps, and short octagonal arms. This cross is set into a square socket stone that includes a lead inlaid inscription. The entire structure is placed on a raised grassy area surrounded by a stone rubble retaining wall, situated in the center of the village. The remnants of the original cross shaft and socket stone can be found in the churchyard to the south of the church.
