Description
This is a former bank with offices above, dating to 1911. Designed by W Couldrey of Paignton, the building is constructed with a ground floor of polished marble and upper floors of Flemish-bond red brick with Portland stone ashlar dressings. Brick chimneyshafts are topped with old pots, and the roof is slate, steeply pitched and hipped at each end. The building is three storeys high with attics.
The symmetrical front elevation features a 1:3:1 window arrangement, with the outer bays projecting to full height. The ground floor has channelled rustication, with doors on each side and wide windows in the recessed centre, all under segmental heads with projecting keystones. The windows have transoms and upper mullions. The doors have shaped fielded panels, topped by plain mullioned overlights. First- and second-floor windows are 12-pane sashes, set within eared and shouldered stone architraves, the lower ones featuring projecting keystones and open pediments. Stone quoins define the outer bays, rising to a plain stone frieze under a moulded egg and dart cornice. A frieze across the recessed centre is supported by giant Ionic columns. The outer bays have pediments carved with shields and swags. The parapet includes lengths of open stone balustrade. Four dormer windows are visible on the roof; the central pair are flat-topped with pairs of eight-pane sashes, while the outer pair are round-headed with casements containing glazing bars.
The interior has not been inspected.
