Description
The Dartington Church of England Primary School, located near Shinner's Bridge in Dartington, was built around 1860-70, with additions made in the later 19th century. The original building is constructed from grey Devonian limestone rubble with dressed limestone quoins and Bathstone dressings, while the later addition utilizes snecked limestone. The roof is slate with gabled ends, featuring stone coping, gablets with finials, crested ridge tiles, and a small metal ventilator.
The school’s design is Victorian Gothic. Originally laid out as a long rectangular plan containing a large school room open to the roof, the right end of the building was later extended. The presence of two front porches suggests the school room may have been originally divided for a mixed school. A prominent lateral stack is located on the front left side and a wing was added to the rear of the right-hand end in the 19th century.
The south front features a gabled porch centrally located to the left, with a stone arch doorway, a hoodmould, two small ogee lancets, and an attached lean-to porch with seven ogee quatrefoil lights and a cusped ogee-head moulded doorway. A large lateral chimney stack with set-offs and a tall ashlar shaft with moulded cap is incorporated into the angle of the gabled porch. A buttress is set back from the left-hand corner, also with set-offs. The left gable end features a large pointed arch window from which the stone tracery and mullions have been removed; above this is a small ventilation slit with a cusped head. The addition to the right end has a plain front wall and incorporates a large four-light stone window in the right-hand gable end containing pointed and cusped heads. The later 19th-century wing at the rear has window surrounds made from red brick.
The interior, which has not been inspected, appears to be a large hall with an arched brace roof supported by moulded stone corbels. The purlins and rafters are exposed, with boarding between them.
The school was funded by the Champernowne family of Dartington Hall.
