Description
Staverton Bridge is a road bridge over the River Dart, built in 1413. It is believed to have fallen into disrepair in the 17th century, which may have necessitated repairs or even some rebuilding. The bridge is constructed of stone rubble and features seven obtusely-pointed arches that span approximately 69 yards, supporting a carriageway that is 10 feet wide. The piers are equipped with V-shaped cutwaters on both sides, with refuges above them. The refuge at the north-west end is rectangular, measuring 5 feet by 8 feet. The bridge has low parapets with chamfered granite coping. Staverton Bridge is recognized as one of the oldest bridges in Devon, and indulgences for its rebuilding were granted in 1413 by Bishop Stafford.
