Description

Winsland House is a small country house dating from approximately 1830 to 1840. It is constructed of stuccoed stone rubble with ashlar joint lining on the stucco. The roof is low-pitched slate with lead rolls to the hips, and deep eaves featuring paired brackets to the soffits. Axial and end stacks are stuccoed, with paired octagonal shafts incorporating moulded bases and caps.

The asymmetrical east entrance front has a doorway near the centre, leading to a stairhall with service rooms extending to the north and principal rooms to the left. The south garden front is symmetrical, with six windows and a central blind bay. The ground floor features French casements with margin panes and intersecting tracery in semi-circular fanlights, while the first floor has 12-pane sashes.

Across the south front and around the east return is a tented-roof verandah, originally supported by slender iron columns with vertical and spiral timber battens for climbing plants, but now with a weatherboarded roof. A screen wall extends to the left of the south facade, featuring battlements at the eaves and two octagonal finials with moulded caps and bases.

The east entrance front includes a round-headed sash window on the ground floor with glazing bars and a 12-pane sash above, as well as a projecting chimney breast. The recessed centre features a doorway with a moulded architrave, fielded and reeded panel reveals, and a glazed door with reed bottom panels. The verandah continues around this front to form a porch with an iron balustrade and wide stone steps.

The central stairhall contains an early 19th-century staircase with turned balusters and a wreathed handrail. Interior joinery, plaster mouldings, and possibly original fireplaces are reportedly intact.
