Description
The Cider House and Granary, attached to the rear of South Bray Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, topped with a slate roof featuring a gable end. The cider house forms part of the rear wing of South Bray Farmhouse and consists of two ground floor rooms. The narrower room, located towards the gable end, is used for racking cider, while the larger room is designated for processing and houses the cider press and crusher. Above the larger room is an apple-loft, and the granary is accessed via front lateral stone steps over the narrower room.
The building features a 17th-century two-light ovolo mullion window above a 19th-century two-light window, positioned to the right of a wide doorway that has a 17th-century lintel and a 19th-century plank door. There are external stone steps leading to the granary at the left end, which has a 19th-century door beneath it. A notable feature is the fine timber mullion window at the rear, which consists of four pointed arched lights with chamfered surrounds and a central chamfered mullion, although the outer mullions have been removed.
Inside, the cider house retains its cobbled floor, cider press, and racks. The original semi-circular arched timber doorway, with a chamfered surround, has jambs that curve to allow cider barrels to pass between the two ground floor rooms. The original roof structure remains intact, featuring three trusses with heavy principals that rest on timber wall-plates, along with two tiers of threaded purlins and a ridge purlin.
