Description
The Tanner Monument, dating from the 1830s, is located about 4 meters southwest of the tower of the Church of St Peter. This monument features an area on a pedestal, enclosed by railings. It is constructed from Portland stone and granite, with cast iron railings, and is designed in the Greek Revival style. The area includes antefixae and pediments adorned with palmettes, all resting on a substantial square-section pedestal made of Portland stone, which has a granite plinth. The pedestal is topped with a moulded cornice and includes inscription panels that commemorate Richard Tanner, who died in 1834, along with other members of the Tanner family. Although the initials on the monument are now illegible, the surrounding railings, likely contemporary to the monument, feature reeded shafts with spear-on-knob finials, and the corner balusters are moulded with vase finials. This monument is an elegant example of Greek Revival architecture.
