Description
The Snow headstone, located approximately 17 metres to the east-south-east of the chancel of the Church of Saint Mary, is a Grade II listed structure dated 1766, with probable restoration in the early 19th century. This headstone is made of sandstone and features bevelled corners, enclosed within a larger 19th-century segmental-headed tooled sandstone frame. The inscription reads: "Here Lieth in hops of a joy/ful Resurrection the Body of Wilmet the Wife of/THOMAS SNOW of this/parish who Departed this Life/the 13 day of December 1766/Aged 59 years./ Pity Nor Sorrow for me take Love/Another for my Sake". The head of the stone has a lightly carved banner inscription that says "Reedeem the Time" on the left, with an illegible inscription on the right, and a central winged cherub's head. At the rear, there is a small chamfered rectangular opening in the 19th-century frame that reveals the inscribed name of the 18th-century mason: "JOHN SNOW".
