Description
This building is a barn and stables located approximately 25 metres west of Bishops Tawton Hall. It dates from the 17th century and was altered in the 19th century. The structure is made of rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a corrugated iron roof featuring gable ends. The barn has a rectangular plan with a projecting front porch, while the stables are situated at the left end.
The porch, which likely dates from the 19th century, features a corrugated iron canopy and has a reset two-light timber window on the left side, with ogival heads above the lights. On the right side of the porch, there is a medieval stone human head corbel that has been reset. The barn includes a square-headed doorway with thick chamfered jambs and a lintel, along with an opposing doorway at the rear that has a plank door.
The stables have a loft door above the plank door, with a two-light window to the right that has eight panes per light. There is a large, probably 16th-century carved wooden figure of Pan located to the right of the loft door, suspended on the wall. The stable fittings are intact, and the roof structure features four raised cruck trusses with collars surviving on three of them, which are morticed into the soffits of the principal beams. Additionally, there are two tiers of threaded purlins and a ridge purlin. An extension at the left end has a reset blind cusped opening to the rear.
