Description

Calverleigh Court is a house built in 1843 for the Amory family, replacing the older Calverleigh Court that was closer to the parish church. The building is colourwashed and stuccoed, likely constructed from stone rubble, and features a hipped slate roof with rendered brick stacks. Designed in the Italianate villa style, it has a deep rectangular plan with the main block being two rooms wide and a central entrance. There is a service wing at the rear right, which extends beyond the main block and forms one boundary of the rear garden.

The house is two storeys tall with a three-bay entrance elevation that has deep eaves supported by timber brackets. It features a tetrastyle portico with half columns and pilasters at the rear. The central entrance has a two-leaf front door with a rectangular fanlight that includes glazing bars, flanked by 8-pane sash windows. The ground floor windows have raised surrounds and moulded cornices on consoles, and are glazed with two-light casements that have high transoms and glazing bars. The first-floor windows, also with moulded surrounds, are fitted with small-pane two-light casements.

The left return of the building is symmetrical with seven bays and similar window details, including a two-storey canted bay in the centre. The rear elevation has three bays, with a glazed garden door in the centre and similar window designs. The right return of the main block retains some original sash windows. The service wing has sash windows facing the rear garden and culminates in a crosswing that features a three-bay colonnade facing the garden, beneath a round-headed niche. The interior has not been inspected but may still contain features from 1843.
