Description
A pair of cottages dating from the late 18th century, located on the north side of Cowick Street in St Thomas. The cottages are built with mass wall construction, with painted and rendered elevations and a slate roof. Number 96 features red ridge tiles with finials, a red brick chimney shaft, and cast iron rainwater goods.
The cottages were constructed to a mirror plan, with each cottage having a single room width and a deep rectangular plan. They are heated by end chimney stacks. The exterior presents a symmetrical appearance with a two-window range. A shared central doorcase, featuring brackets and a projecting cornice, shelters paired entrances. The doorcases contain 20th-century glazed doors with small panes and low panels. Number 96 has a horned sash window on the ground floor to its left. The remaining windows are boxed 16-pane hornless sash windows.
The interior of the cottages has not been inspected, although Number 96 is known to contain Chinese Chippendale glazed cupboards.
