Description
The chapel at Ashe House is a disused structure believed to date from the 14th century, with restorations and window alterations made around the 17th century. It was licensed for use in 1387. This small chapel is built of stone rubble with freestone dressings and features a slate roof, complete with stone coping on the gable ends and apex finials. The windows are chamfered stone, arranged in two, three, and four-light configurations, with flat heads and hoodmoulds. The south doorway is moulded in a Tudor arch style, and there is a blocked doorway on the west end. It is said that the chapel was once connected to the house before the house was reduced in size. Inside, there are signs of a former coved plaster ceiling and a piscina with a moulded two-centred arch. Notably, in 1650, John Churchill, the First Duke of Marlborough, was baptised in this chapel.
