Description

Easton House is a house with origins in the 16th century, significantly altered in the late 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed of ashlar and rubble stone with stone tiled roofs. The main range is a two-storey and attic structure with a ‘T’ plan, largely of late 17th-century design, altered in the early and mid-18th century. The building has large external end wall stacks with diagonally paired shafts and moulded copings. The front elevation has a regular five-window range with a moulded plinth, band, and cornice. It features 12-pane sashes in plain raised surrounds with moulded sills. The central doorway is framed by a Roman Doric columned doorcase with a dentilled pediment.

The east end wall and the rear wing's east side retain a plinth carried around and a smaller cornice moulding. The end wall has two upper blank windows in bolection-moulded surrounds with moulded sills, and two recessed ground floor blank windows with cyma-moulded mullion-and-transom detailing. The rear return is similarly adorned with blank windows with a dripcourse. The rear of the main house, west of the wing, showcases a range of blank mullion-and-transom windows with hoodmoulds. The west side of the wing features matching windows, including two to the first floor, one at half level, and a blank ground floor window to the right of a six-panel door in a chamfered surround with a hoodmould.

A ‘T’ plan lower rear wing, possibly dating back to the 16th century, was altered in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its east side presents a range of mullion windows, comprising a three-light recessed cyma-moulded window with a hoodmould and a two-light flush cyma-moulded window above. The return side includes a large external stack, a two-light mullion window to the first floor, and a small gable over a 16-pane sash with a two-light mullion window and hoodmould below. The west side features an upper two-light window and a return with a coped gable and end stack. The south front was remodelled in the early 18th century to include a six-panel door in a raised moulded surround and a hood on brackets to the right, and a sash in a raised moulded surround to the left. The rear also has mullion windows.

Inside, the house displays fielded panelling, panelled doors leading to the front rooms, and 18th-century fireplaces. The rear wing contains a fine early 18th-century staircase with a moulded rail and twisted balusters, as well as a fielded panelled dado. One fireplace in a ground floor south-east room appears to be a reused circa 1760 overdoor from Corsham Court. The rear wing also features a heavily beamed four-panel ceiling, two scratch moulded doors, some early 18th-century panelling in the central room, a large moulded Tudor-arched east end fireplace, and an exceptional early 18th-century panelled room with a shell niche and marble fireplace.
