Description
Building 29U is an airmen's barrack designed in 1913 and completed in mid-1914 by the architect DM Franklin, with drawings counter-signed by Col A M Stuart, Assistant Director of Fortifications and Works. The building stands east of a group of similar barracks, Buildings 29K-29O and 29P-29T.
The building is constructed with softwood framing and asbestos-cement panel facings and linings, with painted softwood battens covering the joints. Masonry stiffening is present in the gable ends, and the walls rest on concrete levelling slabs with a plinth offset. The roofs are covered with asbestos-cement slates laid diagonally.
Exteriorly, Building 29U features sash windows set within a grid of vertical and horizontal battens. The gables incorporate central masonry stiffening, plastered flush with the wall. The front elevation has twelve bays, featuring eight-pane timber sashes, including a paired window with a wide central mullion, two bays in from each end. An off-centre pair of glazed doors with a five-pane transom-light are located at the entrance, which is approached via two steps. The rear elevation is similar, with paired and smaller paired lights, and a service wing containing ledged, braced, and battened doors and small sashes. The gable ends are plain.
The interior was not accessible for inspection.
Designed in 1913 and completed in mid-1914, Building 29U was planned as two internal rooms, each accommodating twelve men. It forms part of a group of barracks modelled on a standard type of Victorian cavalry barracks.
The building is designated Grade II for its contribution to the best-preserved group of barrack buildings of any RAF base in the United Kingdom and for forming a notable group with the other barracks at Netheravon, illustrating the historic development of the site.
