Description

Providence Chapel and Manse is a Strict Baptist chapel and attached minister's house, dated 1777 and built by Isaac Turner of Calne. The structure features brick with stone quoins and window dressings, a stone rear wall, and a stone slate roof. The chapel has its gable facing the street, with the house located to the rear left, which was added later. There is a 19th-century gabled porch. The chapel is constructed in Flemish bond and has tall windows with wooden glazing bars beneath segmental heads, featuring key stones and abaci. The steep gable is quarter-hipped at the apex and contains a similar segmental-headed sash window. A bellcote was reconstructed around 1960. The interior was remodeled early on when access was moved from its original position on the side of the building, and it was refitted around 1926. Inside, there are simple pews and a gallery over the entrance. The clock and bell, dated 1775, were made by John Broom of Castle Combe. The house has three bays with gable stacks and brick construction, featuring sash windows.

Notable monuments include a shield tablet for Edward Bryant, who died in 1782, and his wife May, which has a weeper leaning on an urn in the gable with bas relief. There is also a monument for Richard Prior, dated 1791 and created by Lovatt of Bath, who donated land for the cemetery at the rear in 1778, as noted on the datestone reset in the cemetery wall. Additionally, there is a monument for John Sutton, dated 1828.
