Description

Sandhayes is a detached house built in the early 19th century, with later extensions added in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Constructed of English bond brick, the house has a tiled roof with decorative bands of diamond tiles and ceramic ridge cresting. The brick stacks are diagonally-set. The building follows a rambling 'L' shape. The three-window entrance front features a glazed verandah containing a nine-panelled door with a fanlight and a two-light casement window. The first floor above has two two-light casement windows with pointed lights and hoodmoulds. A gabled, single-storey addition from the early 20th century extends to the left, incorporating a canted bay with casement windows in a matching style. An early 19th-century range to the right also has a canted bay with pointed lights and a two-light casement to the first floor. The right return side features a rendered bow with French windows incorporating pointed lights and hoodmoulds, and a matching casement window above. The garden front has gabled wings with canted bays and casement windows with pointed lights and hoodmoulds, and bargeboards with decorative pendants. An early 20th-century wing projecting to the right has a two-bay loggia to the ground floor with Tudor-arched openings, casements, and an oriel with pointed lights to the first floor; the front of this wing is simpler in design. Inside, the house features a staircase with turned balusters, six-panelled doors, and window shutters. It serves as a good example of a country house built in the Picturesque style.
