Description
The Dispensary, built between 1807 and 1809, is a significant early example of its type, typically found in larger towns and cities during the early 19th century. It features a front made of Plymouth limestone ashlar, with some slate hanging at the rear, and a dry slate roof behind a parapet that has a band and coping. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall, presenting a symmetrical five-window front with a plinth and voussoirs above segmental arches. The windows are late 19th or early 20th century two-pane horned sashes. A central late 19th or early 20th century porch has a two-window front, with plain monolith pilasters that divide the bays and a moulded entablature topped by a low-pitched gable parapet, which is inscribed with the date 1798, marking the foundation of the dispensary. The rear of the building features tall sashes with glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest.
