Description

Building 36, a police station, was constructed in 1894. It is built of snecked limestone ashlar with slate roofs and ashlar stacks. The building has a rectangular plan with a two-story cross-wing to the left of a single-story range, both facing the main entrance to the Royal Navy Armaments Depot (RNAD) at Bull Point. It is designed in the Tudor Gothic style. The cross-wing features a front gable with horned sashes set within chamfered stone architraves, and includes a mid-20th century timber porch. The single-story range has similar architraves to the doorway and flanking two-light stone-mullioned windows with arched upper sashes.

This police station, a well-crafted example in Tudor Gothic style, forms an integral part of a significant group of buildings within RNAD Bull Point, reflecting the high standards of design established by the Ordnance Board for fortifications and barracks from the 17th century onwards. It is a distinctive building at the main entrance to the depot, situated close to the core group of buildings and relating to a significant period of naval expansion.

Bull Point was the final major project of the Board of Ordnance, which was abolished in 1856, and provided storage for 40,000 barrels of powder. The complex included a floating magazine, a laboratory built in 1805 at St Budeaux, and the magazines at Bull Point themselves. The buildings, primarily in ashlar with rock-faced dressings, front an avenue to the south of the magazines. These buildings demonstrate integrated factory planning and are stylistically consistent with the magazines. Details of the site’s wider history can be found in the description for Building 13.
