Description

This is a store building dating from 1856-7, part of the Royal Navy Armaments Depot (RNAD) at Bull Point. It is a unique surviving example of a specialized building related to the explosives technology of the mid-19th century, originally used for storing percussion caps, fuzes, and percussion tubes. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with rock-faced quoins, plinth, and dressings, and has a corrugated sheet roof.

The building is rectangular in plan and single-storey, with a 3-window range to the northeast side. The northeast side features a central segmental-arched doorway with a boarded door and two blocked windows to either side. The rear elevation also has three similar blocked windows. Gable ends are topped with oculi. The southwest end has a central lean-to with two doorways. The wide, shallow, coped gables have central segmental-arched doorways with recessed, boarded doors, and a narrow ventilation slit to either side. Above are three flat-headed windows with mid-20th century glazing.

Inside, the building has timber trusses.

The store was converted to an examining room in 1866, reflecting a shift in the distribution system of the site away from the Camber following the construction of the powder pier. Bull Point, built just north of the Royal Navy's new Steam Yard at Keyham, was the final major project of the Board of Ordnance. The site's design and layout, specifically the buildings constructed of ashlar with rock-faced dressings fronting an avenue to the south of the magazines, demonstrate a stylistic coherence with the magazines themselves. They present an exceptional example of integrated factory planning from the period, aligning with the high standards practiced by the Ordnance Board in designing fortifications and barracks from the 17th century.
