Description
Walton Castle is a castle keep house built between 1615 and 1620 for Lord Poulett, with significant rebuilding occurring in the late 20th century. The structure is made of rubble with rendered surfaces and stone dressings, topped with asphalt roofs, which have not been inspected. It features an octagonal keep with three floors and a cellar, along with a two-storey rectangular porch on the north side and a polygonal stair turret on the southeast. The windows include one or two-light casements with stone surrounds, some featuring transoms, and a three-light window at the ground floor. The entrance has an early pair of panelled and battened doors, relocated from another site, accessed by five stone steps. The building has a plinth mould, two string courses, a cornice, and a blocking course, with additional steps leading to the cellar level next to the stair turret. This unusual castle folly is situated on a prominent site overlooking the Bristol Channel and was long abandoned and in ruins before being restructured and made habitable again in the late 20th century. While most of the current structure dates from this later period, the keep retains some historical significance alongside the surrounding curtain walls and towers.
