Description
The Church of St Andrew is a parish church built in 1861 by T H Wyatt. It features a combination of flint with random rubble, banded brick and flint, and some rendered areas, topped with tiled roofs. The layout includes a nave, chancel, west tower, south porch, north aisle, and a vestry. The north arcade has been blocked off to create a parish room in the former aisle. The embattled two-stage tower has a pointed west window with three lights and Perpendicular tracery, above which are twin lancets. The belfry contains two-light square-headed Perpendicular windows with returned labels. The remaining windows, dating from the 19th century, feature Perpendicular tracery and come in various forms with square, pointed, or segmental-pointed heads, and consist of one, two, or three lights. The south porch is gabled and has a plank door with wrought-iron strap hinges.
Inside, there is a three-bay, blocked, stilted, segmental pointed arcade supported by octagonal columns with moulded capitals and bases. The pointed chancel arch consists of two hollow chamfered orders, with the innermost order dying into the responds. The tower arch also features two chamfered orders that die into the responds. The nave boasts a hammer beam roof with arch-braced collars, king-posts, and struts, while the chancel has a wagon roof. A 15th-century font with an octagonal bowl is adorned with quatrefoil panels that enclose leaf carvings, all set on an octagonal stem. Most other fittings in the church are from the 19th century.
