Description
This building is a range of 10 almshouses with a central common room, dating from around 1624. The structure features Flemish-bond brickwork and a tiled roof with end stone copings and brick kneelers. It has a heavy, moulded brick cornice and diagonally set, paired brick stacks with moulded caps positioned between the almshouses. The building is single storey and consists of a 10-window range. The windows are moulded, square-headed, 2-light stone mullioned types. There are paired ashlar doorways with depressed 4-centred heads and plank doors.
The central former common room includes an ashlar loggia supported by three round arches. Above the common room, there is a gabled roof featuring a central cartouche of arms, flanked by square-headed casement windows. The central doorway leading from the loggia to the former common room is highly ornate, with a surround decorated with arabesques on the uprights and a palmette above. This doorway also has moulded stiles and rails, topped by a round-headed open panel that contains a fretwork panel with a carved grotesque mask.
