Description

Weston is a house built in 1927, designed by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. It features brick walls, tiled roofs, and brick stacks, and is set on a steeply sloping site with a split-level plan. The building is part three-storeys and part two-storeys, including attics.

The main elevation faces east and has projecting wings at each end. The central section slightly projects forward and features a pedimented parapet. The entrance is located in this section and includes an enclosed classical portico supported by Tuscan columns and an entablature, all made of unstained timber. The entrance has a panelled door. On the ground floor, there is one stained timber casement window with lead lights, while the first and second floors each have three similar windows. The north wing contains one similar window on the first and second floors, with the ground floor situated below ground level. The south wing has one similar window on each of the ground, first, and second floors.

In front of the south wing, there is an attached garage with brick walls and a half-hipped tiled roof featuring a weatherboarded gable. The rear elevation includes a two-storeyed bay window with hipped roofs and casements similar to those on the front. The attics have hipped dormers with matching casements. Additional features include stained timber glazed doors, ornamental lead rainwater heads, and a cistern marked "Guys Hospital 1775." There is also a modern glazed timber extension to the rear wing.

Inside, the main staircase is made of unstained timber and has plain balusters and a handrail, while a second staircase features heavy turned balusters. The main living room includes a raised panel dado and a stone fireplace flanked by carved Corinthian pilasters. The housekeeper's room has carved panelling and a niche by the fireplace with a rusticated arch. This is the only Lutyens house in Dorset.
