Description
The railings at the approach to The Citadel North Entrance in Portland were constructed around 1880. These cast iron railings extend approximately 130 meters along the east side of the approach road to the prison's North Entrance, curving to finish about 35 meters northwest of the entrance. The railings consist of 33 bays, each measuring about 3.7 meters. They feature bold standards that stand approximately 1.2 meters high, with a circular shape on a square base, topped with a block and crown that also includes a ball and spikes. Many of the top blocks display the initials "VR" in a sunk panel. There are two continuous horizontal rod rails with a diameter of about 500 millimeters, which include some 20th-century replacements. The railings are set against a concrete curb and are well-maintained, forming part of the original construction at The Verne. These railings are included for their group value.
