Description
The Church of St Nicholas, built in 1840 by Lewis Vulliamy, is a Grade II* listed building located in Winterborne Clenston. It features a combination of banded flint and ashlar stone with ashlar dressings, topped by a stone slate roof with stone copings. The church's layout includes a nave, chancel, north and south transepts, and a west porch with a tower above. The two-stage west tower is crowned by an octagonal stone spire.
The west door has a pointed arch with an ogee curved label and a foliate finial, while above it is a trophy of arms set in a cinquefoiled niche. The north side has a cinquefoiled window, and the south side is blank but bears the inscription "MM 1840". The belfry features two-light windows with curvilinear tracery and an arcaded cornice above. The nave is adorned with cinquefoiled lancet windows, and the transept windows consist of two-lights with pointed heads and returned labels. The east window is a five-light pointed design with perpendicular tracery and a label with carved stops. The church retains its original ribbed doors.
Inside, notable features include moulded, ribbed roofs that create panel effects, with the chancel decorated with stars. The chancel arch is pointed and chamfered, supported by respond capitals. The transepts are boxed, and there are arcaded altar rails with a moulded rail. The church also contains a 19th-century wooden traceried pulpit, 19th-century glass, 19th-century pews, and various 18th and 19th-century monuments.
