Description
The Smith monument, located in the churchyard about one metre north of the tower of the Church of St James, is a headstone with a sarcophagus and footstone dating from the early 19th century. Made of limestone, it is designed in a Neo-Greek style. The headstone features a segmental head with shaped shoulders, a carved mourning female and tomb in relief, and a swagged border. There is a raised panel with a triangular top intended for an inscription, commemorating John Smith, a late Purser in the Royal Navy, who died in 1806, along with other family members. The coffin-shaped sarcophagus stands about 15 centimetres high. The footstone has an eared segmental head and displays the initials J.S. 1806 and EI 1860.
